Yellow-crowned Night Heron with Crawfish, 40 Acre Lake, Brazos Bend State Park, Needville, Texas

Thanks to the giant alligator blocking the path to the Spillway Trail I circled around 40 Acre Lake instead – coming across this Yellow-crowned Night Heron hunting. After swallowing the crawfish I noticed a water snake in the water about twenty feet away. It swam closer to the Night Heron and I thought for sure he would try to catch it – but instead he tripped over the snake and startled himself, then glided along in search of more food.
